Why We're Rallying

Jean Elie’s Living Practical is doing something special here. It’s taking the quiet friction of two people trying to build a life together and translating it into something you don’t often see Black couples get in comedy: a story that’s actually funny, grounded, and still allowed to go completely absurd and left field.

The cast and crew behind this are the real signal to us. Jean Elie (Send Help, Insecure, Rap Sh!t, Wonder Man), CJ Obilom (Grand Crew, The Black Hamptons, a 2026 NAACP Theatre Award nominee), Tristen Winger (Insecure, So Help Me Todd), with an Emmy-winning editor, a DGA Associate Director with 20+ years on major productions, and a cinematographer who’s spent over a decade building his eye. This isn’t a first-time swing. This is a group of working artists choosing to make something on their own terms and without permission.

Seven episodes are already shot. The $10,000 ask is to finish the work — color grade, sound design, VFX, re-edits, pickups, and the marketing campaign to put it in front of audiences. Nothing speculative, nothing early-stage. Just the push to carry a completed series across the finish line.

If you’ve ever been in the apartment-fight stage of a relationship, if you’ve ever gotten the worst advice from the person you love most, if you’ve ever wondered whether you and your person are actually growing in the same direction — Living Practical is making a show for you. We’re rallying because we want to see Black couples get to be messy, magical, and loved on screen.

Living Practical

The Story

What happens when the fantasy of building a life together collides with the reality of actually living together?

The negotiation. The compromise. Your lifestyle is under scrutiny. It’s time for some real talk.

Meet Yvette and Bernard.

Living Practical is a comedy series that heightens everyday relationship conflict into supernatural chaos, where Bernard’s relentless ambition and Yvette’s grounded reality collide with hilarious consequences.

We’re raising $10,000 to complete post-production and bring the series to audiences.

Rooted in physical comedy, grounded emotions, and the messy realities of building a life together, the series transforms familiar relationship struggles into something absurd, honest, and undeniably funny. It’s a story about two people navigating love, ambition, and whether growth is actually possible.

Synopsis

In an apartment in Los Angeles, a contemplative and frustrated woman lies awake, staring daggers at her boyfriend, who sleeps peacefully beside her.

The couple is Yvette and Bernard.

When Bernard stirs and reaches for her, Yvette falls off the bed while avoiding his touch. Just before hitting the ground, she suddenly levitates. Bernard catches her using telekinesis.

She gets up and tosses the entire bed, with Bernard still in it.

They’re clearly not on the same page. The problem? Bernard has no idea what’s going on.

Instead of asking Yvette directly, Bernard seeks advice from Marsh, his best friend and the worst possible person to consult. Marsh’s solution is simple: be nice, wait on her, and make grand gestures.

Every attempt only digs Bernard deeper into the doghouse.

A romantic dinner for two ends with wine splashed in Yvette’s face. A public apology featuring floating flowers and a vintage boombox ends in disaster and reveals another unexpected development: Yvette can freeze time.

Ultimately, Bernard’s attempts to fix their relationship without understanding the real problem only create more chaos. But when he finally takes responsibility for his role in Yvette’s frustration, the couple begins to reconcile.

Then, just as things seem to settle down, a new situation emerges. New powers and an unexpected explosion leave Yvette and Bernard standing in the wreckage of their new reality.
