Biography

Yvonne Orji (born December 2, 1983 in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, Nigeria) is a Nigerian‑American actress, comedian, producer, and writer best known for her breakout role as Molly Carter on the critically acclaimed HBO series Insecure (2016–2021), a performance that earned her a Primetime Emmy Award nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series and multiple NAACP Image Award nominations. After graduating with a bachelor’s degree and a master’s in public health from George Washington University, Orji transitioned from stand‑up comedy to television, quickly becoming a fan favorite for her sharp wit and emotional depth.

 

Her film credits include roles in Night School (2018), Spontaneous (2020), the hit Hulu comedy Vacation Friends (2021) and its sequel Vacation Friends 2 (2023), and The Blackening (2022), showcasing her range across both comedy and ensemble ensemble features. On television beyond Insecure, Orji has appeared in guest roles on series like Jane the Virgin, lent her voice to animated projects including My Dad the Bounty Hunter and Velma, and starred in the voice cast of The Chosen Adventures beginning in 2025.

 

Orji’s work also spans hosting and specials: she has headlined stand‑up specials such as Momma, I Made It! and A Whole Me on HBO, hosted the romantic‑comedy reality series My Mom, Your Dad on HBO Max, and served as host of the 2021 International Emmy Awards. Recent career developments include a multi‑year first‑look production deal with Sony Pictures Television, expanding her role behind the camera, and her executive producer credit on the Ghanaian film The Fisherman, which marks a strategic step into global cinema and supporting diverse storytelling.
