Biography
Yolonda Ross is an award-winning American actress, writer, and director whose career spans over two decades across film, television, and theater. Born on July 31, 1974, in Omaha, Nebraska, Ross initially moved to New York City to pursue fashion before discovering her passion for acting after working as an extra on Saturday Night Live. Her breakthrough came with her powerful lead performance as Treasure in the HBO film Stranger Inside (2001), which earned her the Gotham Independent Film Award for Breakthrough Performer and nominations for the Independent Spirit Award for Best Debut Performance and a Black Reel Award. This early acclaim established Ross as a compelling dramatic talent and opened the door to a steady and respected career in independent cinema and television.
Ross quickly built an impressive résumé in film, appearing in Antwone Fisher (2002), directed by Denzel Washington, as well as Shortbus (2006), Todd Haynes’ experimental biopic I’m Not There (2007), Woody Allen’s Whatever Works (2009), and the short film Thanksgiving (2004), in which she played the lead role.
