Biography

Sheryl Lee Ralph is an award-winning actress, singer, and producer whose career spans more than four decades across television, film, and Broadway. She first rose to prominence originating the role of Deena Jones in the Broadway musical Dreamgirls, earning a Tony Award nomination for Best Actress in a Musical and establishing herself as a powerhouse performer. Ralph went on to build a prolific on-screen career with standout roles in films such as The Mighty Quinn, Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit, and To Sleep with Anger, while becoming a television staple through memorable performances on series including Moesha, where she played Dee Mitchell, and It’s a Living.

 

Throughout her career, Ralph has demonstrated remarkable versatility, appearing in a wide range of projects such as Ray Donovan, Instant Mom, Claws, and Greenleaf, while also lending her voice to animated hits like The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder. Her enduring excellence reached a new peak with her critically acclaimed role as Barbara Howard on the hit ABC comedy Abbott Elementary, created by Quinta Brunson. For her performance, Ralph won the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series, becoming only the second Black woman to win in that category, and later earned additional honors including a Critics’ Choice Television Award and multiple nominations from the Screen Actors Guild and Golden Globe Awards.
