Biography
Shemar Franklin Moore (born April 20, 1970 in Oakland, California) is an American actor, producer, former fashion model and television host whose career has spanned more than three decades. Moore first rose to prominence portraying Malcolm Winters on CBS’s long-running daytime drama The Young and the Restless (1994–2002, with recurring returns in later years), a role that earned him a Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series and multiple NAACP Image Awards. He transitioned to primetime fame as Special Agent Derek Morgan on the hit CBS crime drama Criminal Minds (2005–2016), becoming one of the show’s most recognizable and long-serving cast members and garnering nominations including for a People’s Choice Award. Moore continued his television success as Sergeant II Daniel “Hondo” Harrelson in the action series S.W.A.T. (2017–2025), anchoring the series for eight seasons and earning critical attention including a Critics’ Choice Super Awards nomination for Best Actor in an Action Series. Following the conclusion of S.W.A.T., he is set to reprise the role in the franchise’s upcoming spinoff S.W.A.T. Exiles, continuing his association with the character. In 2026 Moore is also returning to his roots in daytime television with a multi-episode arc as Malcolm Winters on The Young and the Restless (airing April 2026), marking a milestone nearly three decades after his original debut.
In feature films, Moore’s credits include ensemble work in The Brothers (2001), romantic comedy The Seat Filler (2004), dramatic roles in Diary of a Mad Black Woman (2005), the romantic comedy The Bounce Back (2016), and mainstream franchise appearances as G.U.N. Agent Randall Handel in Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (2022) and Sonic the Hedgehog 3 (2024). He has also lent his voice to several DC animated films. Beyond acting, Moore was the third permanent host of Soul Train (1999–2003) and has produced television projects, while his philanthropic efforts include supporting multiple sclerosis research through his clothing label Baby Girl LLC. Across his career he has accumulated numerous accolades, including eight NAACP Image Awards and a Daytime Emmy, alongside various nominations recognizing his work in drama and action television.
