Biography
Shannan E. Johnson is an American screenwriter, story editor, and development executive known for her work in television writing, script consulting, and creative development. A native of Houston, Texas, Johnson began her career behind the scenes in Hollywood as a development and current programming executive at the Syfy network, where she helped manage and oversee programming including series such as Haven, Being Human, and Warehouse 13. Transitioning from executive work into writing and consulting, she later founded The Professional Pen, recognized as the first Black-owned script consultancy dedicated to helping writers develop film and television projects from concept to pitch while mentoring emerging storytellers entering the industry.
As a television writer and story editor, Johnson has contributed to several projects across scripted television and independent film. She worked as a script consultant on the series Monogamy and later joined the writing staff of the series Á La Carte, where she served as executive story editor and writer on multiple episodes in 2023. Her writing credits also include the short film Truffle Sauce, a coming-of-age story she developed as both writer and executive producer, and the in-development television project All Screwed Up.
Beyond her screen credits, Johnson has built a reputation as a mentor and creative strategist for writers across the industry. Through her consultancy and development work, she has collaborated with production companies and networks while helping emerging writers secure opportunities with platforms such as allblk, Hulu, and Nickelodeon. Her screenwriting has also earned recognition in competitive industry programs and fellowships, including placements as a finalist in the Warner Bros. Television Workshop, AT&T Hello Lab, WeScreenplay, and Film Pipeline competitions—distinctions that highlight her voice as a rising television storyteller.
In recent years, Johnson’s career has centered on expanding her work in television writing and development while continuing to build The Professional Pen into a resource for diverse storytellers. With credits in scripted television, independent film development, and industry mentorship, she continues to contribute to the growth of emerging writers and new narratives in film and television.
