Biography
Ruben Santiago-Hudson is a Tony Award-winning actor, playwright, screenwriter, and director whose celebrated career has spanned Broadway, television, and film for more than three decades. Widely regarded as one of the foremost interpreters of August Wilson’s work, Santiago-Hudson earned the 1996 Tony Award for Best Featured Actor in a Play for his powerful performance as Canewell in Seven Guitars, a role that firmly established him as a major force in American theater. He made his Broadway debut in Jelly’s Last Jam alongside Gregory Hines and later appeared in acclaimed productions of Gem of the Ocean and Stick Fly. As a playwright, Santiago-Hudson received widespread acclaim for his autobiographical play Lackawanna Blues, becoming the first artist in Broadway history to write, direct, and star in the same production. The play earned him Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circle honors along with a Tony Award nomination for Best Actor in a Play, while the HBO adaptation received Emmy, Humanitas Prize, Writers Guild, and Producers Guild recognition.
Beyond acting, Santiago-Hudson has built an acclaimed directing career on stage, earning Tony and Drama Desk recognition for his direction of Jitney, which won the Tony Award for Best Revival of a Play. He also directed the Tony-nominated Broadway production of Skeleton Crew and helmed the world premiere of The Other Americans by John Leguizamo. His screenwriting work includes adapting Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom for Netflix, directed by George C. Wolfe and starring Viola Davis and Chadwick Boseman, which earned him multiple screenplay nominations including Writers Guild, Critics Choice, and Satellite Award recognition. His television acting credits include notable appearances in Castle, Billions, East New York, The Quad, and Public Morals.
In recent years, Santiago-Hudson has continued to dominate the stage with a celebrated return to Lackawanna Blues, earning a Tony nomination for Best Actor in a Play and winning the Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Actor. As of 2026, he stars as Bynum Walker in the Broadway revival of Joe Turner’s Come and Gone alongside Taraji P. Henson and Cedric the Entertainer under the direction of Debbie Allen, a performance that has already generated major awards attention. He is also set to appear opposite Tom Hanks and Kelli O’Hara in the upcoming stage production of This World of Tomorrow at The Shed in New York.
