Biography

Rapman (born Andrew Onwubolu on June 6, 1989 in Deptford, London, England) is a British rapper, record producer, screenwriter, director, and actor who has emerged as one of the most distinctive voices in contemporary British cinema and television, blending socially conscious storytelling with innovative narrative styles. He first garnered widespread attention with his guerrilla-style three-part YouTube crime drama Shiro’s Story (2018), written, directed, and narrated through rap, which captured millions of views online and earned the Part 2 episode the GRM Daily Rated Award for Video of the Year. The success of Shiro’s Story led to a recording and creative partnership with Jay-Z’s Roc Nation and opened doors into feature filmmaking.

 

Rapman made his feature film debut with Blue Story (2019), a powerful musical crime drama based on his earlier work, which he wrote, directed, and narrated. The film, produced by BBC Films and distributed by Paramount Pictures, became the highest-grossing British urban film at the UK box office and earned critical praise for its raw portrayal of friendship and gang culture. Blue Story won Best Film at the 2020 NME Awards and received multiple nominations at the National Film Awards UK.

 

In television, Rapman created and served as showrunner, writer, and director for the Netflix superhero drama Supacell (2024), a genre-bending series that reimagines sickle cell disease as a source of superhuman powers and centers Black experiences within a fresh sci-fi narrative. The series debuted to global Top 10 streaming rankings, was renewed for a second season in 2024, and earned Rapman a 2025 NAACP Image Award win for Outstanding Directing in a Drama Series as well as BAFTA TV Award nominations, including Best Drama Series.

 

In recognition of his impact on drama and music, Rapman was appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in the 2022 Birthday Honours by Queen Elizabeth II. Over the course of his career, he has also taken on acting and production roles in various television projects and continues to develop new film and TV work, including high-profile feature projects in development. Known for his vivid storytelling, genre versatility, and commitment to socially relevant themes, Rapman stands as a leading creative force shaping British and global screens.
