Biography

Jeffrey Wright (born December 7, 1965, in Washington, D.C., USA) is an acclaimed American actor whose career spans stage, film, television, and voice work. Renowned for his versatility and commanding presence, Wright first drew wide attention on Broadway, where his performance in Angels in America (1993) earned him the Tony Award for Best Featured Actor in a Play. He reprised his dual roles of Belize and Mr. Lies in the acclaimed HBO adaptation (Angels in America, 2003), winning the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Limited Series or Movie.

 

Wright’s film breakthrough came with his starring portrayal of artist Jean‑Michel Basquiat in Basquiat (1996). Throughout the 2000s and 2010s, he built a diverse body of work including Shaft (2000), Ali (2001), The Manchurian Candidate (2004), Broken Flowers (2005), and Syriana (2005). He became a familiar face in major franchises, playing CIA operative Felix Leiter in Casino Royale (2006), Quantum of Solace (2008), and No Time to Die (2021), and the technical genius Beetee Latier in three films of The Hunger Games series. His credits also include The Ides of March (2011), Wes Anderson’s The French Dispatch (2021) and Asteroid City (2023), and as Lt. James Gordon in The Batman (2022).

 

On television, Wright garnered acclaim as Valentin Narcisse on Boardwalk Empire (2013–2014) and as robot programmer Bernard Lowe on HBO’s Westworld (2016–2022), earning multiple Primetime Emmy nominations. He has also voiced The Watcher in the animated Marvel series What If…? (2021–2024) and appeared in the dystopian drama The Last of Us (2025) as militia leader Isaac, adding further depth to his TV résumé.

 

Wright’s most celebrated recent work came with American Fiction (2023), in which he delivered a powerhouse performance as novelist Thelonious “Monk” Ellison. For this role, he received his first Academy Award nomination for Best Actor, as well as nominations from the Golden Globe Awards, Screen Actors Guild Awards, and other major honors. The film and Wright’s performance were widely praised during the 2023–2024 awards season.

 

In the mid‑2020s, Wright continued to balance high‑profile film roles—such as in Wes Anderson’s The Phoenician Scheme (2025) and Spike Lee’s Highest 2 Lowest (2025)—with ongoing television work. As of early 2026, he remains one of Hollywood’s most respected character actors, known for bringing intelligence, nuance, and emotional depth to a wide range of roles.
