Biography
Gina Prince-Bythewood (born June 10, 1969) is an acclaimed American film and television director, writer, and producer whose work blends emotional depth with genre-spanning storytelling. After beginning her career in television writing—penning episodes of A Different World, South Central, Felicity, Sweet Justice and earning two Daytime Emmy nominations early on—Prince-Bythewood transitioned to filmmaking with her breakthrough feature Love & Basketball (2000), a critically lauded romantic drama that debuted at the Sundance Film Festival and earned her the Independent Spirit Award for Best First Screenplay along with a Humanitas Prize.
She followed with the HBO romance Disappearing Acts (2000), and then directed The Secret Life of Bees (2008), an adaptation of Sue Monk Kidd’s best-selling novel that garnered multiple People’s Choice and NAACP Image Awards. Prince-Bythewood continued to build her reputation with Beyond the Lights (2014), a music drama that received widespread critical acclaim and an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Song.
Prince-Bythewood’s prolific work in television includes creating and executive producing the social-issue drama Shots Fired (2017), and directing pilots and episodes for Marvel’s Cloak & Dagger and the ABC limited series Women of the Movement.
In recent years she made history as the first Black woman to direct a major comic-book film with The Old Guard (2020), which premiered on Netflix to record viewership. Her next major film, The Woman King (2022), a historical epic starring Viola Davis, earned her nominations for Best Director from both the Critics’ Choice Awards and the British Academy Film Awards, among other accolades, and was widely praised for its powerful ensemble and cultural impact. She was also honored with the American Cinema Editors’ Golden Eddie Filmmaker of the Year Award in 2023.
Looking ahead, Prince-Bythewood is directing the highly anticipated adaptation of the bestselling fantasy novel Children of Blood and Bone (scheduled for release in early 2027), for which she co-wrote the screenplay. The film promises to bring Tomi Adeyemi’s richly imagined world to life with an ensemble cast and marks another bold expansion in her storytelling range.
Across both film and television, Prince-Bythewood has been celebrated for creating compelling narratives centered on complex characters—particularly women of color—earning over 20 wins and 30 nominations from major critics’ groups and industry bodies while breaking barriers for diverse voices in Hollywood.
