Biography

Delroy Lindo (born November 18, 1952) is a British‑American stage, film, and television actor whose career has spanned five decades and numerous iconic roles across genres. After graduating from the American Conservatory Theater and making his first screen appearance in the 1970s, Lindo gained widespread notice in the 1990s with an acclaimed body of work, especially through his collaborations with director Spike Lee — including Malcolm X (as West Indian Archie), Crooklyn (Woody Carmichael), and Clockers (Rodney Little) — which helped establish him as a commanding on‑screen presence in both drama and mainstream cinema.

Throughout the late ’90s and early 2000s, Lindo continued to diversify his filmography with standout performances in Get Shorty (Bo Catlett), The Cider House Rules (Arthur Rose), Ransom (Detective Lonnie Hawkins), Gone in Sixty Seconds (Roland Castlebeck), and voice work in Pixar’s Up. His work in television has been equally varied, spanning roles such as Alderman Ronin Gibbons in The Chicago Code, Winter in Believe, and a regular supporting role as Adrian Boseman on the acclaimed legal drama The Good Fight.

Lindo’s performances have garnered significant industry recognition over the years, including a Satellite Award win for Glory & Honor, multiple Critics Choice nominations for both television and film, and ensemble honors with The Harder They Fall. Despite consistent critical acclaim — including buzz for roles in Malcolm X and Da 5 Bloods — major award nominations had eluded him until 2026, when he earned his first‑ever Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor for his portrayal of blues musician Delta Slim in Ryan Coogler’s genre‑bending thriller Sinners (2025). The film itself made history with a record 16 Oscar nominations, and Lindo’s powerful lead performance has been widely celebrated as one of the most memorable of his career.

Known for his commanding screen presence, versatility across mediums, and deep commitment to character work, Lindo continues to shape a body of work that bridges blockbuster entertainment and critically respected drama, making him one of the most enduring actors of his generation.
