Biography
Courtney A. Kemp (born May 4, 1977 in Westport, Connecticut) is an American television writer, producer and show creator best known for crafting one of the most culturally impactful crime drama franchises of the 2010s and 2020s. After graduating from Brown University and earning further credentials from Columbia University, Kemp began her career in entertainment writing for magazines before transitioning to television. She wrote for acclaimed series including The Bernie Mac Show, Eli Stone, and The Good Wife, earning a Primetime Emmy nomination for Outstanding Drama Series in 2011 for her work on The Good Wife.
Kemp’s breakthrough came in 2014 when she created the Starz drama Power, a gritty, character-driven story of James “Ghost” St. Patrick’s double life as a nightclub owner and drug kingpin. The series became Starz’s flagship hit, running six seasons and spawning widespread critical and commercial acclaim — including multiple NAACP Image Award nominations and recognition for ensemble performances.
Building on Power’s success, Kemp developed an expanding franchise known as the Power Universe. She created and executive produced direct spinoffs such as Power Book II: Ghost and oversaw the universe-wide success of Power Book III: Raising Kanan and Power Book IV: Force, each exploring new timelines and characters rooted in her original world.
Throughout her career, Kemp’s work has been recognized within the industry; in addition to her Emmy nomination, she was a Writers Guild of America nominee for Dramatic Series for The Good Wife and acknowledged for advancing representation behind and in front of the camera.
In 2021, after a multi-year partnership producing Power and its spinoffs under Lionsgate and Starz, Kemp signed a major overall deal with Netflix to develop new content for the global streaming platform, marking a key transition in her career and expanding her creative footprint beyond the Power franchise.
Most recently, Kemp has remained closely tied to the evolving Power universe while launching new projects under her production banner End of Episode. In 2025–2026 the franchise continued to grow with Power: Origins, a prequel series ordered by Starz that explores the early lives of Ghost and Tommy as ambitious young hustlers — a series she executive produces and co-created the pilot for alongside Sascha Penn. Production is underway on an expanded first season, deepening the mythology she first introduced more than a decade earlier.
Kemp continues developing television dramas across genres while solidifying her status as a leading creative force in contemporary TV drama.
