Biography
Charles D. King is an acclaimed American film and television producer, entrepreneur, and media executive whose career has redefined the landscape for diverse storytelling in Hollywood. As the Founder and Chief Executive Officer of MACRO, the multi-platform media company he launched in 2015, King has become one of the industry’s most influential producers, championing projects centered on underrepresented voices while building one of the most successful Black-owned independent media companies in entertainment. Before founding MACRO, King made history at William Morris Endeavor (WME), becoming the first African American to rise from the agency’s mailroom training program to partner in its motion picture department, where he represented many of Hollywood’s most celebrated filmmakers, actors, and creators.
Under King’s leadership, MACRO has produced, financed, and developed a critically acclaimed slate of award-winning films and television series. His film credits include Fences (2016), starring Denzel Washington and Viola Davis; Mudbound (2017); Roman J. Israel, Esq. (2017); Sorry to Bother You (2018); Just Mercy (2019); Judas and the Black Messiah (2021); Really Love (2020); One of Them Days (2025); Opus (2025); Eternal Return (2025); Wizkid: Long Live Lagos (2025); and Rock Springs (2026). On television, MACRO has produced acclaimed series including Netflix’s Raising Dion, the bilingual comedy-drama Gentefied, and has continued expanding its scripted television slate with numerous projects in active development.
King’s productions have earned widespread critical recognition, including multiple Academy Award nominations and wins. Fences received four Academy Award nominations, with Viola Davis winning Best Supporting Actress, while Mudbound became the first film with a woman cinematographer nominated for an Academy Award. Judas and the Black Messiah received six Academy Award nominations and won Oscars for Daniel Kaluuya’s Best Supporting Actor performance and H.E.R.’s Best Original Song. Across its growing library, MACRO’s productions have collectively amassed more than a dozen Academy Award nominations, multiple Emmy, BAFTA, Critics Choice, SAG, Golden Globe, Independent Spirit, and NAACP Image Award nominations and victories, establishing the company as one of the industry’s premier independent studios dedicated to inclusive storytelling.
Beyond producing, King has become a leading investor and business executive. He co-founded MaC Venture Capital, one of the nation’s largest seed-stage venture firms, investing in technology companies that shape the future of media, commerce, and culture. He also serves on numerous influential boards, including the Sundance Institute, American Cinematheque, College Track, and other organizations committed to advancing education and the arts. His impact has been recognized through honors including the PGA Vision Award, the HPA League Honors Star Award, Howard University’s honorary Doctor of Humane Letters, the Reel Works Changemaker Award, multiple appearances on the Variety 500, The Hollywood Reporter’s list of the most powerful people in entertainment, Fast Company’s Most Creative People in Business, Ebony’s Power 100, and numerous trailblazer and leadership awards recognizing his transformative influence on Hollywood and the entertainment business.
As of 2026, King continues to expand MACRO’s global footprint through an ambitious slate of film, television, and international productions. Recent and upcoming projects include the Jean-Michel Basquiat biopic Samo Lives, the Nat King Cole biopic, The Empire of Ebony, Don’t Ever Wonder, ’68, Cleopatra Jones, and several high-profile television projects currently in development.
