Biography
Chaka Balamani is an American actor, filmmaker, writer, and producer known for his extensive work in independent film and television, particularly within the Washington, D.C.–Maryland film community. Beginning his media career in 1999 as a studio camera operator and technician at America’s Voice in Washington, D.C., Balamani later trained in television production at DCTV, where he became a certified television producer and field technician specializing in camera, audio, and lighting. He transitioned into acting in 2000 with his on-screen debut in the short film Hair Like Wool Feet Like Bronze and soon began building a diverse résumé that spans more than three decades of work in film, television, and stage productions.
Over the years, Balamani has appeared in numerous independent projects, including films such as 7th Day (2013), 6 Hearts 1 Beat (2013), Why Us? (2014), and the thriller Ice (2023). His work also includes roles in The Novelist (2025), where he starred alongside Bismah Ahmed and Tony Amante, further expanding his presence in contemporary independent cinema. In addition to acting, Balamani has become recognized for his work behind the camera, writing, directing, and producing projects through his production company Harbor View Filmworks, which he co-founded with his wife Hope Balamani. His creative output has included television pilots such as Reel Critics TV, Tailgate Kings, and Beast of the East, as well as original films and web series that focus on socially conscious storytelling and community-driven narratives.
Balamani’s independent filmmaking has also earned recognition on the festival circuit. His holiday feature A Christmas Bonus (2025), which he wrote, directed, and acted in, toured multiple international film festivals and won several awards during its early festival run, while highlighting health issues affecting Black women and underserved communities. The film’s festival success further strengthened his reputation as a filmmaker dedicated to socially relevant stories and grassroots production.
Earlier in his career, Balamani received industry recognition with a nomination for Emerging Artist in 2012 from the Federal City Alumni for Film & Acting and was also named among Filmgrade Magazine’s Rising Stars in Entertainment the same year. Alongside his acting work, he has remained active as a director and producer, continuing to develop feature films and independent productions while mentoring emerging creatives and expanding his work through Balamani Media Productions. As of February 2026, Balamani remains an active figure in independent filmmaking, balancing acting roles with directing and producing projects that spotlight community issues and diverse storytelling.
