Biography

Ayo Edebiri (born October 3, 1995, in Boston, Massachusetts) is an American actress, comedian, writer, producer and director who has rapidly established herself as one of Hollywood’s most dynamic talents. She first gained widespread recognition for her breakout role as aspiring sous chef Sydney “Syd” Adamu on the critically acclaimed FX/Hulu series The Bear (2022‑present), a performance that earned her a Primetime Emmy Award, a Golden Globe Award, a Screen Actors Guild Award, and a Critics Choice Award, along with multiple nominations including consecutive Golden Globe nods and several Emmy nominations for both acting and directing—making her the first Black woman ever nominated in the same year in both comedy acting and directing categories and the youngest Black woman in Emmy history to receive three acting nominations.

 

Before The Bear, Edebiri was active as a stand‑up comedian and television writer, contributing to shows such as Big Mouth, Dickinson, and serving as a writer and consulting producer on What We Do in the Shadows, earning a Writers Guild of America nomination. She has also showcased her voice work and comedic range in animation, including Big Mouth, Netflix’s Mulligan, Max’s Clone High, and as the voice of Envy in Pixar’s Inside Out 2.

 

Edebiri’s film work spans a diverse slate of roles: she co‑starred in the cult hit Bottoms, appeared in Theater Camp, and lent her voice to Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem. Her recent and upcoming feature credits include the A24 horror thriller Opus (2025), Luca Guadagnino’s psychological thriller After the Hunt (2025) opposite Julia Roberts and Andrew Garfield, and James L. Brooks’s comedy Ella McCay. In addition to her screen work, she’s slated to star in and co‑write an A24/Mattel Films adaptation of Barney & Friends, and is set to make her Broadway debut in the 2026 revival of Proof alongside Don Cheadle.

 

Known for her versatility, sharp comedic voice, and boundary‑breaking achievements behind the camera, Edebiri continues to shape her multifaceted career across television, film, animation, and theater.
