Biography

Ariana DeBose is an Academy Award–winning American actress, singer, and dancer whose dynamic performances across film, television, and stage have made her one of the most versatile performers of her generation. She first gained national attention as a contestant on the reality competition series So You Think You Can Dance, before building a respected Broadway résumé that included roles in productions such as Hamilton, A Bronx Tale: The Musical, and the title role in Summer: The Donna Summer Musical, which earned her a nomination for the Tony Awards for Best Featured Actress in a Musical.

 

Transitioning successfully to film and television, DeBose appeared in projects including Hamilton (2020), The Prom (2020), and the musical comedy series Schmigadoon!. Her breakthrough came with her portrayal of Anita in West Side Story (2021), directed by Steven Spielberg, for which she won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress, becoming the first openly queer woman of color and the first Afro-Latina to win an acting Oscar. The performance also earned her the Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actress – Motion Picture, BAFTA Award for Best Actress in a Supporting Role, Critics’ Choice Movie Award for Best Supporting Actress, and Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role, among many other honors.

 

Following her Oscar-winning breakthrough, DeBose expanded her presence in major studio and streaming projects, starring in films such as Argylle, I.S.S., and Kraven the Hunter, while also voicing the lead character Asha in the Disney animated feature Wish. She has continued to maintain strong ties to the performing arts community, including hosting the Tony Awards, which earned her a Primetime Emmy Award nomination for Outstanding Variety Special (Live). With her blend of Broadway pedigree, musical talent, and acclaimed screen performances, Ariana DeBose remains a prominent and influential presence in contemporary film, television, and theater as of 2026.
