Biography
Aja Naomi King is an American actress known for bringing intelligence, emotional depth, and quiet intensity to both television and film. A graduate of the University of California, Santa Barbara, and the Yale School of Drama, King began building her screen résumé with early appearances on series such as Blue Bloods, Person of Interest, and The Blacklist before landing one of her first major television roles as Cassandra Kopelson on Emily Owens, M.D.. She later appeared in the medical drama Black Box, but her breakout came in 2014 when she was cast as the ambitious and sharply driven Michaela Pratt on ABC’s hit legal thriller How to Get Away with Murder, created by Peter Nowalk and executive produced by Shonda Rhimes. Over the course of the show’s six-season run, King became a standout member of the ensemble opposite Viola Davis, earning widespread recognition and helping anchor one of the most culturally significant dramas of its era. Her performance contributed to the show’s awards success, including a Primetime Emmy win for the series, while also elevating King as one of the most compelling actresses of her generation.
On the film side, King has steadily assembled a body of work that balances prestige, independent storytelling, and mainstream visibility. She appeared in The Rewrite opposite Hugh Grant, starred in the sci-fi thriller Reversion, and drew significant attention for her role as Cherry Turner in The Birth of a Nation, the historical drama directed by and starring Nate Parker. She later expanded her range with roles in The Upside, A Girl from Mogadishu, Sylvie’s Love, The 24th, Boxing Day, and A Little White Lie, consistently choosing projects that allowed her to move fluidly between romance, period drama, social commentary, and character-driven independent cinema. Her screen presence has often been defined by restraint, sophistication, and an ability to ground complex stories with emotional realism.
King’s acclaimed later-career work has only strengthened her standing in the industry. In 2023, she delivered one of her most celebrated performances as Harriet Sloane in Lessons in Chemistry, starring alongside Brie Larson. Her performance earned her a Primetime Emmy Award nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie, marking a major milestone in her career and reaffirming her place among television’s most respected dramatic performers. In 2024, she also appeared in The Knife, a psychological drama directed by Nnamdi Asomugha that premiered at the Tribeca Festival and added another strong dramatic credit to her résumé. Most recently, King stars as Catherine in NBC’s Grosse Pointe Garden Society, continuing her evolution into mature, layered lead and ensemble work on network television. With a career defined by consistency, range, and elevated performances across both film and television, Aja Naomi King remains one of Hollywood’s most accomplished and enduring talents.
