Sterling K. Brown is joining Tom Hanks and Callum Turner in Sony Pictures’ upcoming drama The Comebacker, directed by Marielle Heller.

Patricia Clarkson and Amy Madigan are also part of the cast. Inspired by a short story from author Dave Eggers, the film is being positioned as a love letter to America’s pastime.

Heller adapted Eggers’ story for the screen. The film follows a New York Mets pitching coach, played by Hanks, and his pitcher, portrayed by Turner, after the young player is struck by a line drive during a game. Madigan plays the team’s owner, Clarkson portrays the coach’s wife, and Brown takes on the role of the Mets manager.

Gary Goetzman will produce through Playtone alongside Heller and Leah Holzer of Defiant By Nature. Major League Baseball and the Mets are also involved, with Working Barn and Charles Miller serving as executive producers.

Brown, an Oscar nominee and three-time Emmy winner, currently stars in Hulu’s Paradise, which has been renewed for a third season. He earned an Academy Award nomination for American Fiction and is widely recognized for his Emmy-winning work on This Is Us, as well as his role in Black Panther.

His recent credits include Amazon MGM’s Is God Is. He is also set to star opposite Natalie Portman in The Gallerist and appear in Amazon MGM’s live-action Voltron.
