Biography

Ellie Foumbi is a Cameroonian-American filmmaker, writer, and director known for her psychologically rich, character-driven storytelling across independent film. She began her career with short films such as Zenith (2017) and No Traveler Returns (2019), both of which screened on the festival circuit and established her early voice as a filmmaker focused on identity, trauma, and moral complexity. A Columbia University School of the Arts MFA graduate, Foumbi first gained major industry attention with her feature debut Our Father, the Devil (2021), a critically acclaimed thriller about a former child soldier confronting the man who destroyed her past. The film premiered in the Venice Biennale College Cinema program and went on to win the Tribeca Festival Audience Award, along with multiple international honors and nominations across the Independent Spirit Awards, Gotham Awards, and various global festivals.

Following the success of her debut, Foumbi quickly transitioned into higher-profile studio collaborations while maintaining her independent filmmaking sensibility. She is next set to direct Fleur, a Paris-set drama starring Halle Berry. The film follows a New York housewife who reinvents herself after leaving a long marriage, eventually building a new identity in Paris before her past resurfaces. Foumbi wrote and directs the feature, which is produced by AGC Studios and Killer Films, with production taking place in Paris and completion expected for a 2026–2027 release window.

As of today, Foumbi’s career is in a significant expansion phase, moving from acclaimed indie breakthrough filmmaker to internationally financed feature director. Alongside Fleur, she continues to develop additional film and television projects that center complex female protagonists and morally layered narratives, further cementing her reputation as one of the emerging voices in contemporary global cinema.
