Biography

Deon Taylor is an American filmmaker, writer, director, and producer best known for building a commercially successful lane in independent thrillers, horror, and urban suspense through his company Hidden Empire Film Group. A former professional basketball player turned self-taught filmmaker, Taylor first gained attention with early genre work like Nite Tales, Dead Tone (also known as 7eventy 5ive), and Chain Letter, before breaking through with the hit comedy-horror film Meet the Blacks. He went on to establish himself as a reliable theatrical filmmaker with a string of high-profile releases including Traffik, The Intruder, Black and Blue, Fatale, The House Next Door: Meet the Blacks 2, and Fear, earning a reputation for fast-moving, audience-driven genre storytelling and for creating commercially viable films centered on Black casts and perspectives.

 

Beyond features, Taylor has also expanded into television and documentary-style storytelling through projects tied to Hidden Empire, while continuing to develop material as both a writer and producer. His recent career remains especially active: he is attached to direct the upcoming feature Tink, and he has also been developing the horror project Don’t Open the Door, while IMDb additionally lists Drift among his current directing work in progress. Taylor’s industry recognition includes a Webby Awards win tied to Black History in Two Minutes (or so), an African-American Film Critics Association Horizon Award, and the Location Managers Guild International Humanitarian Award, underscoring a career that blends entrepreneurship, independent filmmaking, and consistent genre output.
