Biography

Sivuyile Ngesi is a South African actor, comedian, television presenter, and producer known for his versatility across film, television, and live performance. Born on October 18, 1985, in Gugulethu, Cape Town, he began performing at a young age, appearing in the stage musical Les Misérables as Gavroche before transitioning into film and television. Ngesi gained early international exposure with roles in films such as The World Unseen (2007), Invictus (2009), directed by Clint Eastwood, and Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom (2013). He also appeared in the television film 24: Redemption, tied to the hit series 24, further establishing his presence in international productions.

 

Throughout the 2010s, Ngesi built a reputation as one of South Africa’s most dynamic entertainers, balancing acting with comedy and hosting. His one-man comedy show DeKaf earned the Golden Ovation Award for Best Comedy at the National Arts Festival in 2010, and he later received a Spirit of the Fringe Award in 2017 for producing multiple shows at the same festival. On television, he became widely recognized as the host of the lifestyle series The Man Cave, which earned him nominations for Best TV Presenter at the South African Film and Television Awards (SAFTAs). He also hosted and produced the cooking competition show Jou Ma se Chef and appeared in series including Black Sails, Dam, Jiva, and Tali’s Baby Diary. His performance as Victor in Dam earned him a SAFTA nomination for Best Supporting Actor, marking a significant milestone in his acting career.

 

Ngesi’s film career expanded with roles in Copposites (2012), Bhai’s Cafe (2019), Kaalgat Karel (2021), and the acclaimed boxing drama Knuckle City (2019), which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival and was selected as South Africa’s submission for the Academy Award for Best International Feature Film. In 2022, he joined the cast of the historical epic The Woman King, starring Viola Davis and John Boyega, further raising his global profile.

 

In recent years, Ngesi has continued to expand his career internationally while remaining active in South Africa’s entertainment industry, appearing in projects such as Happiness Is (2024) and the Netflix holiday series Yoh! Christmas. Beyond acting, he is also recognized for his social activism, including initiatives aimed at combating period poverty through the production and distribution of affordable sanitary products for young women in South Africa. As of early 2026, Ngesi remains a prominent figure in African entertainment, known for his work across film, television, comedy, and advocacy.
