Biography

Blair Underwood is an acclaimed American actor, producer, director, and author whose career in television, film, and theater spans more than four decades. Born August 25, 1964, in Tacoma, Washington, Underwood rose to national prominence with his breakout role as attorney Jonathan Rollins on the NBC legal drama L.A. Law (1987–1994), a performance that earned him a Golden Globe nomination and established him as one of television’s most recognizable leading men. Over the years he built a diverse career across multiple genres, appearing in films such as Set It Off, Deep Impact, Rules of Engagement, Something New, and Tyler Perry’s Madea’s Family Reunion, while also delivering notable television performances in series including City of Angels, Dirty Sexy Money, In Treatment, Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Quantico, Dear White People, and the acclaimed limited series Self Made: Inspired by the Life of Madam C. J. Walker, in which he starred opposite Octavia Spencer. His performance in Self Made earned him the NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Actor in a Television Movie, Mini-Series or Dramatic Special, adding to a long list of honors that includes multiple NAACP Image Awards, a Grammy Award for Best Spoken Word Album for narrating An Inconvenient Truth, and two Golden Globe nominations.

 

Underwood has also earned acclaim on the stage, receiving a Tony Award nomination for Best Actor in a Play for his portrayal of Captain Richard Davenport in the Broadway revival of A Soldier’s Play, which itself won the Tony Award for Best Revival of a Play. His theater work further includes a celebrated Broadway performance as Stanley Kowalski in A Streetcar Named Desire, demonstrating his versatility beyond screen acting.

 

In film, Underwood has continued to expand his body of work in the 2020s, appearing in projects such as Origin and the 2024 horror thriller Longlegs, in which he played FBI agent William Carter. The film became a major independent box-office success, grossing more than $100 million worldwide and earning strong critical reception.

 

Beyond acting, Underwood has worked as a director, producer, author, and narrator, including audiobook work such as narrating Truly. His career has been widely recognized for its cultural impact, and in 2025 he received the Legacy Achievement Award at the Lexus UPTOWN Honors Hollywood event for his four-decade contribution to film and television and for helping expand representation of complex Black characters on screen.
