Gina Torres is an American actress and producer whose commanding presence and versatility have made her one of television and film’s most respected performers over a career spanning more than three decades. Born in New York City and trained in opera and jazz, Torres first appeared onscreen in the early 1990s with roles on series like Law & Order and One Life to Live, before gaining notice in genre television with recurring appearances on shows such as Cleopatra 2525, Hercules: The Legendary Journeys and Xena: Warrior Princess. Her breakout came when she portrayed the tough and loyal Zoe Washburne on Joss Whedon’s cult classic Firefly and later reprised the role in the feature film Serenity. She also earned acclaim for her portrayal of the complex assassin Anna Espinosa on Alias and the enigmatic Jasmine on Angel early in her career.
