Biography

Gina Torres is an American actress and producer whose commanding presence and versatility have made her one of television and film’s most respected performers over a career spanning more than three decades. Born in New York City and trained in opera and jazz, Torres first appeared onscreen in the early 1990s with roles on series like Law & Order and One Life to Live, before gaining notice in genre television with recurring appearances on shows such as Cleopatra 2525, Hercules: The Legendary Journeys and Xena: Warrior Princess. Her breakout came when she portrayed the tough and loyal Zoe Washburne on Joss Whedon’s cult classic Firefly and later reprised the role in the feature film Serenity. She also earned acclaim for her portrayal of the complex assassin Anna Espinosa on Alias and the enigmatic Jasmine on Angel early in her career. On the big screen, Torres appeared in major films including The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions, while her diverse film credits also include I Think I Love My Wife, South of Pico, Five Fingers and more recently the Netflix romantic comedy The Perfect Find (2023).

 

Torres’ television career reached new heights with her iconic turn as Jessica Pearson on USA Network’s legal drama Suits, a role that brought widespread recognition and led her to make history in 2019 as the first Afro‑Latina to create, star in and produce a television series with the Suits spin‑off Pearson. For Pearson, she garnered critical praise and multiple awards, including an ALMA Award, an Imagen Award and recognition from the National Hispanic Media Coalition. Throughout her career she has earned a total of multiple award nominations across the ALMA, Imagen and Saturn Awards, among others, and has won accolades for standout performances in both television and genre work.

 

In recent years, Torres has continued to carve a dynamic path in television and voice work. She has been a series regular on Fox’s procedural drama 9‑1‑1: Lone Star as Paramedic Captain Tommy Vega, a role that earned her the Actress Award for Television at the Critics’ Choice Celebration of Latino Cinema & Television. She has also expanded into voice acting, portraying characters such as Keeper Yennen on The Legend of Vox Machina and Ms. Moreno on Disney+’s Kindergarten: The Musical, while further exploring dramatic work with a recurring role as Special Agent Linda Grant in Fox’s thriller Memory of a Killer (2026). Outside of screen work, Torres is known for her advocacy for diversity and inclusivity in media, mentoring emerging Latinx talent and participating in charitable initiatives.
