Biography

RJ Cyler (born Ronald Cyler II on March 21, 1995, in Jacksonville, Florida) is an American actor known for his compelling performances across film and television. Cyler made a notable breakthrough with his lead role as Earl Jackson in the critically acclaimed indie drama Me and Earl and the Dying Girl (2015), earning nominations from the San Diego Film Critics Society and the Critics Choice Awards for Best Young Performer early in his career. He gained wider recognition portraying Billy Cranston / the Blue Ranger in the 2017 big-screen reboot Power Rangers, which also garnered him a Teen Choice Award nomination for Scene Stealer. His diverse film credits include roles in War Machine (2017), White Boy Rick (2018), Sierra Burgess Is a Loser (2018), the Shakespeare-inspired R#J (2021), and the acclaimed Western The Harder They Fall (2021), part of a cast that received ensemble honors including a Gotham Award Tribute. Cyler’s performance in the socially sharp thriller Emergency (2022) was featured at Sundance, and he also executive produced and starred in the Civil War drama Freedom’s Path (2022), which won ensemble prizes on the festival circuit.

 

On television, he’s been seen in Vice Principals (2016), held a main role in Showtime’s I’m Dying Up Here (2017–2018), and starred in Scream: Resurrection (2019), Black Lightning (recurring), and the HBO Max comedy Rap Sh!t (2022-2024). In 2026, Cyler continued to expand his range with a recurring turn as Langston in Peacock’s comedy-mystery series The ‘Burbs and appeared in the genre thriller Night Patrol (2025), underlining his versatility in both dramatic and genre-bending fare.
